I only found meditation later in life. But imagine if I had started experiencing its benefits at a much younger age. Could it have helped me navigate the emotional rollercoaster as a young adult, allowing me to study more efficiently for tests? I definitely know it would have helped me to be able to communicate better with my classmates and parents in a kinder more understanding way.
At first, the idea of asking a child to meditate may seem like a laughable task. Initially, it was very hard to get my own kids to sit still for 30 seconds, let alone 5-7 minutes. But teaching kids the fundamentals of meditation isn’t entirely out of reach. Now, my kids are constantly watching how I act and react as a parent, soaking up information like sponges. That’s why modelling a regular meditation practice can go a long way in helping them to establish their own mindfulness habits. With the right approach, parents, educators, caregivers, and loving relatives can teach meditation for kids to help them understand how to calm their minds and settle into their bodies, allowing them to better process their feelings, retain new information, and improve focus.
Teaching mindfulness to kids can have a positive effect later on in life as an adult, both physically and mentally, benefiting them in terms of heightened cognitive performance and building resilience. The benefits of meditation for kids extend far beyond improving focus and performance, and teaches kids to be more in control of their emotions. It has also been shown to help kids develop an awareness of their own learning or thinking processes, something that’s referred to as metacognition. This is a skill that can essentially help them become better students as they gain more awareness around what learning strategies work best for them.
Mindfulness has been shown to:
High school students who practiced meditation were found to have a better attention span than those who did not. That’s because, over time, meditation trains the mind to be less easily distracted. And with sharpened emotional intelligence comes essential life skills such as resilience, empathy, active listening, and humility.
